It is important to always do some warm-up exercises before asanas.
The following routine, or any exercises that increase circulation
throughout the body, may be done:
Stand
and rub the palms together briskly; then massage face and entire
body. Run in place, or hop on both feet. Vigorously shake the
whole body - be loose. Let the head fall forward, backward, and
from side to side. With arms outstretched to either side, do some
arm-circling-forward and backward. Reach straight up and stretch
as high as possible; then, keeping legs straight, bend forward
letting the head and arms fall toward the floor.
Sit on the floor with legs crossed, hold the feet with the hands,
and roll gently backward and forward on the spine. Stretch both
legs straight out in front; then grab one foot with both hands
and pull it up to the right ear and then to the left ear. Now
take it around in large circles, first away from the body, letting
the knee fall to the side as the leg bends. Repeat with opposite
leg. Place soles of feet, and pull them as close to the body as
possible. Then press the knees toward the floor. Place hands on
knees and push down gently - do not strain. Stretch legs straight
forward again, and "shake them out", by alternately
slapping the backs of legs on the floor.
